Rest is maintenance, not a reward.

Permission to do nothing

For a lot of people rest has to be earned, and the price keeps going up. There is always one more thing that should be done first, so the doing of nothing never quite becomes allowable.

The reframing that seems to actually work is mechanical rather than emotional. You service a car before it breaks, not as a treat for the car. Rest is maintenance. It is part of the running cost of being a person, not a bonus paid out for good behaviour.

Boundaries land the same way once you stop hearing them as rejection. They are not a way of punishing people. They are structure. They are the thing that makes it possible to keep giving anything at all.

The lines here are almost all about small reclaimed pockets of time. Eleven minutes in a car after drop off. Twenty minutes watching nothing happen in a garden. An hour at five in the morning that belongs to nobody else.

What people said

The future I want is small. A garden. A kettle. Someone who stays.

longing

Not everything has to mean something. Some days are just days.

still

I used to fill silence with noise. Now I fill it with nothing and it's the most luxurious thing I own.

still

I gave myself permission to do nothing today. It was the hardest thing I've done all week.

still

Quiet isn't empty. Quiet is full of all the things I finally stopped running from.

still

I'm learning that boundaries aren't selfish. They're architecture.

still

I went somewhere new today. Nothing happened. But I went.

wonder

I sat in the garden and watched nothing happen for twenty minutes. Best twenty minutes of my week.

still

Took the long way home. No reason. Just because I could.

still

I'm learning that rest isn't lazy. It's maintenance. You service a car. You can service a human.

still

Sunday. Pyjamas. Nowhere to be. No one to answer to. This is what freedom tastes like.

still

I have nothing to report. Nothing happened. And that's the nicest sentence I've written in months.

still

I fell asleep on the sofa at 8pm and nobody judged me. Because nobody was there to judge. Bliss.

still

My inbox can wait. My kids can't. Priorities sorted.

still

I've learned that doing nothing is sometimes the most productive thing you can do.

still

Not every day has to mean something. Some days are just days. And that's fine.

still

I've stopped chasing peace. I'm just... in it. Quietly. Without permission.

still

I sat in the car after drop-off and just... existed. No one needed anything from me for eleven minutes.

still

5am. Tea. Silence. The only hour that's entirely mine.

still

He fell asleep on the sofa reading and I watched him breathe and thought: I made this person.

tender

Sat in the car park for ten minutes after the school run. Not because I had nowhere to go. Because I finally had nowhere I had to be.

still

Nothing needs to come of the quiet for the quiet to have been worth it.

You can put something down here without giving your name.
